Mission & Vision
Strength Through Strides

Our Mission
Through our commitment to advocacy, community, and policy reform, Strength Through Strides exists to reframe the narrative around sexual violence, empower survivors to reclaim their stories, and create lasting systemic change that prevents future harm.
Our Vision
We envision a world where survivors of sexual violence are met with belief instead of doubt, support instead of shame, and justice instead of silence—where their resilience is celebrated, their voices amplified, and their experiences drive meaningful change at every level of society.
Current Projects

Legislative Advocacy
STS is actively working with lawmakers at both the state and federal levels to champion the Summer Willis Act and the SOS Campus Safety Act, which will strengthen protections for survivors and hold perpetrators accountable.

“A Letter to My Younger Self”
An animated short film in collaboration with award-winning filmmaker Hisko Hulsing (known for Amazon’s “Undone”). This groundbreaking project will take audiences into the raw reality of trauma and the powerful journey of rebuilding and reclaiming life after assault.

Denim Day 5K Series
Set to launch in April 2026 across five major U.S. cities, this nationwide running event will honor survivors, raise awareness, and build community while raising funds for sexual assault charities.
Survivor Leadership
We believe those who have lived through sexual violence are best positioned to lead the movement for change. We center survivor voices in everything we do.
Radical Resilience:
We reject the narrative that survivors are permanently broken. Instead, we celebrate and amplify their extraordinary strength and resilience.
Bipartisan Action:
Sexual violence is not a partisan issue. We work across political divides to create solutions that protect all survivors, regardless of background or belief.
Trauma-Informed Approach:
We recognize the impact of trauma and create spaces, programs, and advocacy efforts that prioritize safety, choice, collaboration, and empowerment.
Intersectional Awareness:
We acknowledge that sexual violence affects different communities in different ways, and we commit to addressing these disparities in our work.
Transformative Storytelling:
We believe in the power of stories to change hearts, minds, and laws. We create platforms for survivors to share their experiences on their own terms.
Our Story
“Summer realized she had a choice: remain silent, or use her voice to change the system. So she laced up her running shoes and began a journey that would transform both her life and the lives of countless other survivors.”

In 2014, Summer Willis was raped. The trauma of the assault was compounded by a system that seemed designed to silence her and a society that too often blamed victims rather than perpetrators.
The statistics were staggering: for every 100 rapes, 99 would never see justice. Fewer than 20% of assaults were ever reported. And 70% of survivors experienced moderate to severe distress—more than victims of any other violent crime.
For a decade Summer suffered in silence remain silent, but finally, she decided to channel her pain into purpose through endurance challenges that would force people to confront the reality of sexual violence.
In the years that followed, Summer found healing through running—a way to reclaim her body and take back what had been stolen from her. What began as personal healing evolved into a powerful platform for advocacy. Her extraordinary physical feats became metaphors for the survivor journey: challenging, painful, but ultimately showcasing incredible strength and resilience.
As media attention grew, Summer connected with other survivors who shared their stories and joined her mission. What began as one woman’s healing journey transformed into Strength Through Strides—a movement dedicated to reframing how society views sexual violence and creating pathways for survivors to reclaim their power.
Today, STS works at both the grassroots and governmental levels, hosting community events, providing resources, advocating for policy reform, and producing multimedia content that amplifies survivor voices. Summer herself has taken her advocacy to the halls of Congress, championing landmark legislation including The Summer Willis Act and the SOS Campus Safety Act.
